Drama Blog Post

Today in Hurumanu 2 (Drama) we did some work on Freeze Frames. I have done blog posts about this many time so if you want to learn about freeze frames go onto my older posts.

The subject we had to do Freeze Frames on was a story called Bullies. It's about 4 boys who bully one student. We had to do 4 Freeze frames on parts of the story. The first Freeze Frame was about the boys waiting at a bus stop. The second Freeze Frame was about the boys planning who they were going to bully at the back of the bus. The third Freeze Frame was about the boys bullying the short kid with glasses. The fourth and final Freeze Frame was about the boys denying the accusations of the bullying.

Here is the first Freeze Frame.

The techniques used in this Freeze Frame are Levels, (People at different Heights)
Expressions, (What peoples face looks like) and Gestures. (What position people are in)
Eg. David is on the Ground, in a ball, staring off into space.

This is the second Freeze Frame.

The same techniques are used in this Freeze Frame too. Dylan is sitting on his knee deep in thought.

This is the third Freeze Frame

Reuben is standing up pointing at David and laughing.
Today we watched a video about being the Victim in a Bullying Scenario. It was made by a 12-year-old boy who was getting bullied in the video. Here is the link to the video.

We had to answer some questions about the video and imagine what our character would look like. Who am I? Here you must think of the 3 aspects of your character.

1. physically -age, gender, appearance. 12 years old, Boy, Brown hair, Brown eyes, tan skin.

2. Social - family, friends, job/role.   A younger sister, Mum, no dad. No friends. Does the Paper Run every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday.

3. Psychological - emotion, thoughts. When he gets bullied he asks himself "What did I do to deserve this?"

Chelsea Bremner

Today I read an article about one of my teachers Chelsea Bremner. She helped win the Farah Palmer Cup for Canterbury and has been chosen for the Possible and Probable Black Ferns Squad along with her sister Alana Bremner.

The Article was about girls getting into rugby and some of the Canterbury squad are teaching them.

The article made some really good points about Chelsea starting to play rugby because of her sister looking like she was having fun and how she picked the game up so quickly.

Chelsea started playing 4 years ago at Lincoln University for their team.

Thank you for reading my blog post.

Geometry DLO

Today My Buddy Adrian and I created a DLO about the things we have learnt in Geometry for this term so far. We had to explain the meaning, give an example, and provide a diagram. The reason for this DLO is to teach someone else a few things about Geometry. It didn't take very long but the final result has come out pretty good. The most challenging part was learning about it before we could put it in the DLO. Here is the DLO

Coastal Wolves DLO

Reuben and I have created a DLO about Coastal Wolves. We had to create this after Whaea Raewyn showed us a video that Paul Nicklen created about the Coastal Wolves. We had to do a lot of research and that was a little challenging but it was fun including a lot of facts in the DLO, but to make it more interesting we created a surprise at the end of the slide. Here is the DLO about the Coastal wolves.

Novel Study. Before Reading

Hello everyone welcome back to my blog. It is the second day of term 4 and today we started out Novel Study. The book I chose is called Freak the Mighty, before we started reading we had a few questions we had to answer. Mostly about inferencing and looking at the cover to find clues about the text. This is the blurb on the back;

'Killer Kane, Killer Kane, had a kid who got no brain!'  Maxwell Kane is used to being called stupid. Worse still everyone says he looks like his fearsome dad. Even his grandparents are a little afraid of him. But then he meets Kevin, who isn't afraid of anything. Together with Kevin, the 'midget man' with the biggest brain in the world, Max can handle anything. Together, they are Freak the Mighty, ready to slay dragons and rescue damsels in distress. But, as they soon find out, it isn't just damsels who need rescuing...

These are the questions;

Read the blurb on the back. Does this interest you? Why/Why Not?
The blurb is very informative and tells us a lot about the main characters. It seems like it will be a very enjoyable book and I don't think I will be able to put it down.

What impression do you get from the front cover? What can you infer about the book?
The cover doesn't really tell you much about the story, it's just a picture of a man with a child on his shoulder raising a sword up to the sunset. From that, I can infer that there is something to do with a child and a man. But other than that I can't really infer anything else about that.

I predict the book will be about...
I predict the book will be about a kid with Special needs or a facial deformity or something like that who gets bullied but then he finds a friend and they go on adventures. To a faraway land or an imaginary land.

(Secret Spot)
Thank you for reading my blog I hope you have an amazing day and/or life.

Business and Enterprise 2020

Yesterday we had the Business and Enterprise 2020 market day. It's when everyone creates some time of thing they can sell and try to make some money. Our group was called Freshake (It's pronounced Fresh ake). We made vanilla milkshakes with added chocolate syrup for $0.50. We sold over 40 milkshakes for 3 dollars each. In total, we made exactly $160, but our expenses cost us $20.68 so that makes out profit $139.32.

Before the market day, we had to do a lot of planning. We had to figure out what we were doing, how we were doing it, we had to make a poster, and also apply for finance so we could purchase what we needed. Our poster took the longest to make but we also had to print one which was pretty cheap only $0.20 so that didn't change the expenses much.

We had to borrow a blender from our teacher because we needed a blender to blend the milk and icecream. Aparrently our milkshakes tasted pretty good but the only thing we put in there were Milk and Vanilla Icecream. So it could have been the right amount of milk and icecream.

Overall I'm really pleased with the outcome and how much money we made. I did not expect to make that much money, I thought we would make about $50. But I am really thankful for my teammates for helping each other and getting good ratings from our customers.

Script Detective

Today in Hurumanu 2 (Drama) we had to make a copy of this slide. Last week we played some games which Mrs Clark called "Drama Processes". We played "7 Up" and a few other games.

We are learning how to read a play and we did a picture dictation with the play.
The photo isn't very good (Sorry)

Polynesian Way finders Explanation Writing

Today in Hurumanu 1 (New Zealand History) we finished writing an explanation writing assessment about Polynesian Way Finders. Polynesian Way Finders are people from southeast Asia that travel to all of the small islands. eg. Niue, Cook Islands, Fiji, etc. We did it in buddy's so we could give each other feedback, my buddy was Reuben. It took us a while but we had to research everything before we could start writing so that took up most of the time. I hope you like my writing. Feel free to comment.

Do you know how to wayfinding? The Polynesian Voyages have been for thousands of years.

I will be telling you about them. What techniques they use, how they do it, where they go.

The Polynesians started wayfinding about 1496 BC, and have been for thousands of years.

Mostly they started in southeast Asia and voyaged all throughout the pacific ocean.

The techniques that they use are Incredible!. They have to memorize the positions of the stars

and where the sun was at what time of day. They use the sun's position to indicate east and west.

They do this by memorizing the position of the sun at different times of the day. Eg. 07:00am the

sun is just above the horizon indicating east. 12:00pm the sun is way high in the sky indicating North.

06:30pm the sun is just about to finish setting indicating west. (That is in summer. In winter the sun rises

west and sets east).

The Polynesians voyage tremendous distances. They voyage across the Pacific Ocean which is over

160,000,000 Km²

(160 Million Square Kilometers). They make journeys like this every day! Imagine that.

You’re alone on the ocean for months,

your only company is a pet you bring along like a dog for instance.

There is no land in sight and you have a faint idea where you are.

That would be insanely scary. Alone on the vast open ocean with nothing but a dog for company.

Ever seen “Adrift”? It’s a movie that

was made in 2018 and there are two people stuck on a flipped boat in the middle of the ocean.

Alright back to the voyagers.

They travel to Hawaii, Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, and a few other places.

The things that the voyagers rely on are Wa’a Kalua (Double Hulled Canoe) powered by sails and

steered with a large oar. They also need an experienced voyager, a sense of direction, good weather,

know how to fish, how to get fresh water, and how much food they have.

Another thing that amazes me is how they managed to memorize the positions of the stars. Like they

memorized the constellations, the small stars, the

large stars. Everything, (Not every one of the stars that wouldn’t be possible there is over 100 Billion stars!

That's more than all of the people in the world that's

like 14 stars for each person on earth. One final thing, maybe try some of these one days. Go out at night,

try and memorize the stars or even find the

constellations.

I hope you enjoyed learning about the Voyagers. Hope you have a great day. The End.

2010 Canterbury Earthquake

4 September 2010 at 4:35 am. You feel a shake rapidly growing. It starts moving furniture, plates and cups start smashing on the ground. What do you do? do you run? or do you hide underneath a table risking your life both ways?

This is what happened in Christchurch on the 4th of September 4:35am only 1 fatality and 2 serious injuries. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake 11km deep. About 2km away from Darfield but still managed to damage over 25,000 homes which people claimed insurance for which cost $437million.

1 died from a heart attack but it may have happened without the earthquake.  2 serious injuries but over 200 minor.

How would you feel in this situation? Feel free to comment.

Martian Code Mission

Today in Hurumanu 3 (Science) we did a lesson on different types of communicating. We had to use some type of code so David, Reuben and I used Semaphore. Semaphore is a way of communicating using two flags. Each half has to be a different colour, the main colours are red and yellow but we used blue and green. Semaphore was invented in 1792 by Claude Chappe.

Method. Get two different colour pieces of paper and cut them into triangles.
Learn some different letters. Go to different ends of the room and try and send a message to each other.

Results.

Evaluation

P.S We didn't get to do this because all of the other groups were doing it as well and we had no time.

Mohua Furtherest and Fastest Data

Today in Hurumanu 6 (Maths) we have been creating Graphs and Charts to sort out the data on a Google sheet we got sent. We had to figure out the Mean, Median, Mode, and Range using the data we've been given.  My group of Aliyah, Reuben, Ken, David, and I created a Google slide to present the data. We all did it but it took us a while because we didn't have an Explanation of anything to do. We had to do our own stuff and think of what to do because we didn't have any instructions. For the one, I was doing (Height) all of the Mean, Median, and Mode were all very similar. Here is the slide,

Inclusiveness

Today in Wananga we did a task on Inclusiveness. Inclusiveness is letting everyone and anyone do anything they want to do. It doesn't matter what gender, ethnicity, skin colour, anything. Everyone deserves to be included. Once we finished the task we had to answer a few questions. I'm not quite sure what some of them mean so my answers might not make sense. Feel free to comment!

How has this made you feel?

It made me feel sad that people are treated like that and it is not a good thing to do. I'm going to try my best to not judge people as soon as I meet them.

How have your thoughts changed during this lesson?

My thoughts have changed because of the video and how other people have to go through it every day. I think people should not be so judgemental towards other people just because of the way they look.

How will you respond now in situations if you were faced with them again?
I will accept everyone for who they are.

Following Gold Poem

Today in Hurumanu 1 We had to read a poem called "Following Gold". It's about the New Zealand Gold Rush. This is how the poem goes.

I left my home for a new story,

my heart with heavy questions.

What is chance and what is fate? What fortune

lies in the slumbering wait?

No map brought me here - just tales

gilded in promises. I am

a rival among strangers, determined to turn

the earth inside out until my luck has changed.

I follow gold. Sometimes I am lucky

and meet its gaze and hold it close.

I am looking for a future, for my own

share of the light. The river offers few clues.

This is how you learn to walk alone.

This is how you write your story.

By Chris Tse.

I think this poem tells us all about the gold rush and how nobody would share where they found it. Also, hundreds of thousands of people came over to New Zealand just to Try and strike it rich. Most of them failed but a few lucky ones Succeded.

Gold Rush 1860's

Today In Hurumanu 1 (New Zealand History) we learned about the 1860's and above Gold Rush. The main place that the gold rush happened was the Coromandel Peninsula and the West Coast of New Zealand. Once we learned about it we had some questions we had to answer about why Gold is valuable and Where the Gold Rush was, etc. Here are the questions.

1. Why is gold valuable?

Gold is valuable because it's a Malluable material which means it can be melted down and moulded into a different shape that's why Gold is used in Jewellery. Gold is also valuable because it's Rare and looks Attractive.

2. Write a sentence containing the words 'Flecks', 'Quartz' and 'Vein' to say where Gold is found.

Gold is fount as very small flecks in the quartz veins of hard rocks.

3. Where would you find alluvial gold?

You find alluvial gold in rocks that have been worn down over hundreds of thousands of years.

4. Copy the quote that any gold miner would tell you if you asked: "Where is Gold Found"?

"Where it be, there it be"

5. List 6 regions where gold is found in NZ. 1. Otago 2. West Coast 3. Southland 4. Golden Bay 5. Marlborough 6. Coromandel Peninsula.

6. Gold is a rare element. List 4 properties that describe it. 1. It's Inert 2. It's Very Heavy 3. It's Shiny 4. It's Malleable (It can be melted and moulded into a different shape.

7. Name the first European to discover gold in Aotearoa.

Charles Ring. Where was he from? Tasmania. Where did he find gold? At a driving creek near Coromandel Township. When did he find gold? 1852.

8. State how much gold has been found in NZ up to 2003. 998.71 Tonnes

312 tonnes from the Coromandel Peninsula. 274 tonnes from the West Coast. 265 tonnes from Otago.

9. Gold rushes in the following regions started on which date? Coromandel:1867, Golden Bay:1867, Otago:1861, West Coast:1865.

10. List the dates of 2 major and 1 smaller boom in production. Major:1862, 1867, Minor:1982

Timeline For Parihaka

For the last week in Hurumanu 1 (Who Are We (Learning about New Zealand History)) David and I created a timeline which is basically an animation but with only slides with information. It took us a while and I did most of the work but David helped a little. In my opinion, The slides are very detailed and interesting to look at. Hope you learned something new. Feel free to comment!

Mean, Median, Mode, And Range

Today for Hurumanu 6 (Math) we had to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) about how to calculate the Mean, Median, Mode, and Range. It took a bit of time because I didn't know what some of them were and I had so re-learn them again. But I did complete it and I think it's a pretty good explanation of how to calculate them. Hopefully, you learn something new. Feel free to comment!

Making Water

(Late) Last week we did an experiment using Magnesium and Hydrochloric acid. We put a piece of Magnesium in a test tube and a bit of Hydrochloric acid and then covered the test tube with a bigger test tube and we waited for the gas to rise to the top. While we were waiting we grabbed a Burner and waited for it to get hot. Once it was hot we grabbed the top test tube and held it over the Burner. The gas got hot and made a loud POP.

Aim: To make a loud pop.

Hypothesis: I think the test tube will explode because of the gas and the heat.

Equipment: Test Tube x2, Burner, Hydrochloric Acid, Magnesium.

Method: Grab test tube, Put a piece of Magnesium in it, fill it with Hydrochloric acid, put another test tube over the top, grab a burner, turn burner on, wait for burner to heat up, Wait a few mins for acid to eat away at Magnesium, take top test tube and hold it overtop of the burner, wait for the POP.

Observations:I saw that as soon as you put the hydrochloric acid in with the Magnesium the hydrochloric acid starts to bubble. I saw that it made condensation.

Conclusion:You usually get a loud pop.

Discussion:My pop was pathetic but Mr Kane's was really loud.

Evaluation:I think I didn't leave the acid for long enough and that's why my pop wasn't really a pop.

Six Photographs

Today in Hurumanu 1 we read a book called Six Photographs. It's about New Zealand history and old photographs. It's like a time machine going back to the 1800s in New Zealand. It's very interesting because you can see what people were like and how much people's lifestyles have changed and how much our technology has advanced. This is a document about the story. Feel Free To Comment.

Hurumanu 4 Term 2 2020

Today in Hurumanu 4 (Poetic Arts) we did an artboard. We put all of our art and writing on some paper with our names on it. We're doing it so we can display our art on Thursday to show the rest of the students. My most favourite part of my artboard is My Collage. It looks really good with the outlines so you can see it as well. The hardest part was probably the Siapo because I'm not very good at drawing Maori Symbols. My Favourite style of poetry is the Diamante poem because it's really fun to write and it's in the shape of a diamond too. This artboard was really fun to make and do all of the art and writing as well.

Volume

Today in "Hurumanu 5" Maths (Maths and Pe) we finished off a table about volume. We had to calculate the volume of the Gym, Classroom, Ballbin 1 & 2, and the Cupboards. The way you calculate the volume is you calculate the length, width, and height. So if the height of a cupboard was 1 meter, the width was 2 meters and the height was 3 meters. The equation is 2x2x3 so the answer is 12. It took a while because we didn't have enough time to finish all the measurements so we had to ask other people who measured the stuff we didn't measure. Here are my measurements, Feel free to comment! (I accidentally put"Area" instead of Volume" Don't worry about that!)

Water Colour Painting

Today in "Hurumanu 4" we did some watercolor painting. It was really fun to do as well 😎. We had to use 4 different textures of painting. Blend, Salt, Drip, and Splat. (And yes, salt uses real salt.) The colours I chose are Yellow and Orange. The yellow is a lot like gold or "Tan" Here is my Watercolour painting! feel free to comment! (Sorry about the bad picture I had to use my Chromebook)

The Taniwha of Rakaia Gorge

(Late Blog Post) A Few weeks ago we did some drawing about a book called "The Taniwha Of Rakaia Gorge" We had to do different Maori symbols on a piece of paper to tell the story. I'm not sure what any of the symbols mean but I just did the symbols I know. We also made a Diamante poem. A Diamante Poem is a poem with seven lines in the shape of a diamond. The first line is the subject you are doing your poem about, the second line is two describing words about the subject, the third line is three Verbs or Do-ing words but the words have to have "Ing" at the end, the fourth line is a two words about the subject and then two words about the opposite. then it basically reverses, three doing words, two describing words, etc. here is my diamante poem. Feel free to comment!

Via Survey

Today in "Wanaga" we did a VIA survey to see what our Strengths are. There are a lot of questions, probably about 40. I did it pretty fast, probably too fast. Some of the questions are repetitive but they are worded in different ways to trick us. I agree with all of my main strengths but the funny thing is "Humor" is last for me. Here are my main strengths! feel free to comment.

Drawing (Hur4)

Today in "Hurumanu 4" (Poetic Arts) we did some drawing. We had to draw some Stylised Maori Symbols.
We chose a piece of textured paper (I chose Te Tiriti O Waitangi) Here is my drawing feel free to comment (Sorry for the small post)

The Benny Iceberg

Today in "Hurumanu 4" (Speaking My Truth) we had to read a book called "Benny" (I did a blog post on it earlier) and then we had to do the "Iceberg Illusion" which is an iceberg but you can only see the top. The top is usually the good part and underneath the water is the stuff you need to go through to get the good part. eg, Top=Success!, Below the water=Determination, failure, persistence, etc. We did an "Iceberg" about the boy's mother. On the top, she is annoyed, shocked, mad, angry, etc. and on the bottom is all the feelings she felt before and everything else. This information I got from reading the story.

Tapa Cloth Charcoal-ing

Today in "Hurumanu 4 Poetic Arts" we finally finished our tapa cloth. We went over the faded lines with Charcoal sticks. I like the fact that it makes it that little bit bolder but next time I would choose black paper instead of brown. I know this sounds weird but the Charcoal actually stands out more on the black paper. The Charcoal doesn't really stand out as much as I would hope on the brown, but you can kind of see it. The colour paper I chose is; brown paper with a lighter brown crayon to draw the designs.
