Today in "Working From Home" I and my friend Reuben made a presentation about puffins. Myself, and my other friends used to call Reuben, Puffin for no reason so we decided to do Puffins. This is our presentation!

Different Types Of Sentences

In the past few weeks for hurumanu 3, we have been learning about different types of sentences. We have learned about 3 different types of sentences. The w-start, The adverb-start, and the very short sentence.

The w-start starts with a w word, eg. While, whilst, when, and where. Eg. Whilst Bob was sleeping, I crept out of the house. The very short sentence is used to create suspense and or drama. eg. From Moby dick by Herman Melville, Call me Ishmael. And the very short sentence has to be 5 words or less. The Adverb start is a sentence that starts with an Adverb. which is an adjective mixed in with a verb and it has to end with ly. eg. Annoyingly, he had to wait in the car for hours.

We had to write two sentences for each about our biltong experiments or our seedling experiments. These are my sentences. Feel free to comment below!


Adverb-Starts
1. Anxiously, we had to wait 2 weeks before we could try our biltong.
2. Disgustingly, he screwed up his face because the biltong was too salty.

W-Starts
1. Whilst he was gone, the bean went all furry and moldy.
2. When he was gone, the seed attempted to grow.

And finally, Very Short Sentences.
1. The seed grew.
2. The biltong was too salty.

Welcome back to my blog. Today we watched a video about The Treaty Of Waitangi. Here are some facts about the early settlers of Aotearoa.

#1 The population in the late 1830s was 70-80,000. It dropped because of War and introduced disease.
#2 The name of the main settlement was called Kororareka/Russell.
#3 The treaty was neglected for hundreds of years. Some things that happened to it are... It was chewed up by rats, almost lost in a fire, buried under a pile of rubbish, and almost lost in a flood.
#4 In 1883 to stop all the war and fighting and all of the bad stuff. The Maori set up "The United Tribes Of NZ"
#5 For many years the British didn't let France into Aotearoa because they saw France as a threat, because they were already having wars with France back in Europe.
#6 Edward Wakefield was sentenced to 3 years in prison for attempting to marry a 15-year-old and take their money. But while he was in jail he came up with a plan to buy all the land in Aotearoa and sell it for unfair prices. He called the company New Zealand Company.
#7 When the treaty was written there were only 500 Rangatira (Chiefs) that signed it.
#8 When the treaty was written the Maori thought they would get all of their land back but the British thought they would be given all of the Maori land.
#9 Hone Heke was a Maori Cheif, hi didn't like the idea of the treaty so he cut down 4 of the Union Jack flags and for one of them, he burned a village for a distraction and killed 13 people.
#10 Some of the methods that the Maori used to win the northern war were flax walls, log walls, gorilla warfare, and anti artillery bunkers which were bunkers that were covered by logs so the bombs couldn't get in.

Adverb Starts

Today for Hurumanu 3 we did Adverb starts. An adverb is a Verb and an Adjective combined. We started off by writing some w-starts on our whiteboard to practice them because we haven't quite got them yet. Then after the w-starts, we started writing some Adverb-starts.

My adverb start sentences were... #1 Happily, he jumped into the lake. #2 Annoyingly, he was whacked by his sister.

Different Types Of Sentences

Today for hurumanu 3, we worked on different types of sentences. We worked on the W-start which is a sentence that starts with a W word. eg. Whilst, While, When, etc. And the very short sentences, eg. from Moby Dick: "Call me Ishmael".

We had to make a paragraph using 1 very short sentence and two W-starts. This is my paragraph...

Science of Mars Task #2 Growing Seedlings

Last week we planted beans. well not planted but put them in a beaker with a wet paper towel. I was in a group with Kyle. 

Today we looked at the beans again and for some reason mine was moldy. Mine and Kyle's were at the same level and for some reason, Kyle's didn't go moldy.

I think it went moldy because there was too much water and the water drowned it, and then the water evaporated and the bean was exposed to air.

Science of Mars task #2 Growing Seedlings

Today for Hurumanu 3 we learned about seedlings. We made a DLO (Digital Learning Object) about some questions that we had to answer. The questions were... Why do plants always need to grow?  Why might Sunflowers be a good flower to take on a space mission? and What is Germination?
It was kind of tricky because I didn't know what germination was so I had to do a bit of research.

Christchurch Adrenaline Forest

Today I will be telling you about the Adrenaline Forest. The Adrenaline Forest is a cheaper version of the Adventure Park. You can bike around on the courses, climb on the High-Wire courses and much more! It opens at 9am every day and closes at 6pm. Adult entry is $45, Child is $30 and Student is $38. You 3 hours max to run around and do everything. I would recommend trying the high wires even if you're scared of heights. You have to face your fears. Once you do it you will not want to stop.

Summary Of The First Settlers Of Aotearoa

Today in Hurumanu 1 we learnt about the first settlers of Aotearoa. We learnt that Abel Tasman was the first European explorer in Aotearoa and he arrived in 1642. We also learnt that Captain James Cook was the second explorer and he arrived in 1769 Some other things that we learnt were that the Europeans brought pigs, ship rats, potatoes, and a bunch of diseases with them. Before Europeans arrived New Zealand was called Novell Zealandia. The Europeans had a Maori chief navigator called TuPaia.

Some other things that the Europeans brought to Aotearoa are muskets. Muskets are a weapon that fires gunpowder and they are very lethal. In 1840 the ratio for Maori to Pakeha was 40 Maori to 1 Pakeha.

I think that learning about the first settlers in Aotearoa is very interesting because its new to me and I haven't learnt about it before. If you have any questions I should be able to answer it.

Simple to Complex Sentences

Today in Hurumanu 3 we have been practicing Simple to Complex sentences for our writing assessment. And to improve our writing and make it more interesting. For the sentences, we added new words each time to improve it from Simple to Complex. For our simple sentence, we had... The dog ate. This is my work... Feel free to leave a comment!

Simple To Complex Sentences

1.  The dog ate.
2.  The dog ate noisily.
3.  Last night, the dog ate noisily.
4.   Last night, in the kitchen, the dog ate noisily.
5.   Last night, in the kitchen, the pig-like dog ate noisily.

Book Of The Road

On Monday we started this activity called "Book Of The Road". It's an activity where you get a buddy school and you send your work. Our buddy class is from St Peters School (It's a private school). We got a box sent to us from "School Kit" ( the people who founded "Book Of The Road") and it has 3D glasses and envelopes and all that jazz. All we know about our buddy class is that St Peters School is in Cambridge in the North Island.

Facts About Mars

Last week for Hurumanu3 we watched a movie called the martian. (you may have seen my other post about it). We had to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) about 8 facts about mars. Me and Kayden chose to make a biteable. Kayden didn't have a Chromebook so we took turns on mine.

It was kind of tricky because we had to ask open-ended questions. Open-ended questions are questions that cannot be answered with yes or no. It took us about 2 periods to do it but we ended up finishing it just before the bell rang.

Procedural Writing

Today for Hurumanu 3 we did Procedural writing. We did a practice procedural writing about breakfast. We could either do what we had for breakfast this morning or any breakfast we chose.
I chose fried eggs on toast, it was pretty easy but I didn't understand the difference between materials and ingredients but then Reuben told me and I understood. This is the Procedural Writing that I did.

Fried Eggs On Toast

• Materials
• Toaster
• Plate
• Knife & Fork
• Pan
• Stovetop

• Ingredients
• 1 or 2 Eggs
• 1 piece of Bread
• Salt and pepper

• Steps
• Get a pan and put it on a stovetop
• Turn the stovetop onto 7 or 8
• Wait for the pan to get warm and grab 1 or 2 eggs and crack them into the pan
• Put the egg shells into the bin
• Grab a toaster and put the piece of bread into it
• When the toast pops put it onto the plate
• When the edge of the eggs turn white cover the pan
• Wait another 4 to 5 minutes
• When the eggs are finished carefully get them out and put them onto your toast.
• Put salt and pepper on top of the eggs
• Enjoy!

I think fried eggs are really good and they taste good as well. They are a great breakfast because
they have so much protein but just watch out for how much bread you have.
  When using pans please have adult supervision.

Tangata Whenua Who are we Hurumanu1

Today in Hurumanu1 Who are we. We got to watch a video and take notes about The first Māori people that arrived in Aoteroa from Hawaiki around 1280. They came from SE Asia, Taiwan, Solomon islands and Papua New Guinea. Some scientists think they even got as far from South America.

We watched the video and took notes about the history of Aotearoa. We had to take notes about what they brang to Aotearoa like Kumura, Taro and paper mulberry. Aotearoa was dicscovered between 1200-1300 by Kupe and his wife Kuramārōtini when they were chasing Te-weke-a-Muturangi.
Once Kupe and his wife Kuramārōtini had gone back to Hawaiki the people came to Aotearoa in  groups of 12-25 waka with at least 150 people each.

This week we have been making a Biteable "All about me"
We have to go on this website where you can make videos for free and they can be about anything.
First we had to learn to make a video and then we created one for ourselves.
I found it really fun to make because you can put music and change the theme.
The most challenging part was knowing where to put everything and how to change the theme.
The easiest part was adding the text and it was fun too! This is mine!
