Today in Hurumanu 1 we learnt about the first settlers of Aotearoa. We learnt that Abel Tasman was the first European explorer in Aotearoa and he arrived in 1642. We also learnt that Captain James Cook was the second explorer and he arrived in 1769 Some other things that we learnt were that the Europeans brought pigs, ship rats, potatoes, and a bunch of diseases with them. Before Europeans arrived New Zealand was called Novell Zealandia. The Europeans had a Maori chief navigator called TuPaia.
Some other things that the Europeans brought to Aotearoa are muskets. Muskets are a weapon that fires gunpowder and they are very lethal. In 1840 the ratio for Maori to Pakeha was 40 Maori to 1 Pakeha.
I think that learning about the first settlers in Aotearoa is very interesting because its new to me and I haven't learnt about it before. If you have any questions I should be able to answer it.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 7 and in 2021 I will be a year 8. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.
Maybe you could find a book at the library to read to find out more. There are even some interesting ones about the first settlers to Christchurch and Dunedin.

ReplyDeleteI am very impressed with your interest in the history of Aotearoa. I am also very interested in this history as I wasn't taught it at school.
Remember that New Zealand was firstly called Aotearoa by Maori, meaning Land of the Long White Cloud. Then the dutch explorers named it Nova Zealandia.
Let's see where these muskets take the early people...
