Making Water

(Late) Last week we did an experiment using Magnesium and Hydrochloric acid. We put a piece of Magnesium in a test tube and a bit of Hydrochloric acid and then covered the test tube with a bigger test tube and we waited for the gas to rise to the top. While we were waiting we grabbed a Burner and waited for it to get hot. Once it was hot we grabbed the top test tube and held it over the Burner. The gas got hot and made a loud POP.

Aim: To make a loud pop.

Hypothesis: I think the test tube will explode because of the gas and the heat.

Equipment: Test Tube x2, Burner, Hydrochloric Acid, Magnesium.

Method: Grab test tube, Put a piece of Magnesium in it, fill it with Hydrochloric acid, put another test tube over the top, grab a burner, turn burner on, wait for burner to heat up, Wait a few mins for acid to eat away at Magnesium, take top test tube and hold it overtop of the burner, wait for the POP.

Observations:I saw that as soon as you put the hydrochloric acid in with the Magnesium the hydrochloric acid starts to bubble. I saw that it made condensation.

Conclusion:You usually get a loud pop.

Discussion:My pop was pathetic but Mr Kane's was really loud.

Evaluation:I think I didn't leave the acid for long enough and that's why my pop wasn't really a pop.
