10 Fun Facts about Wellington

Wellington, a place where you go if you would like to be blown over by the wind. For our quick write today we had to try and find 10 facts about Wellington.

1.Location. Wellington is at the very bottom of the North Island.

2.Population. Wellington has just under 250,000 people. That's a lot of people and I bet you can imagine what it's like in peak hour traffic.

3.Māori name. Wellington's Māori name is Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

4. Celebrities from Wellington. A few famous people from Wellington include Russel Crowe, Kerry Fox, Karl Urban, Emmet Skilton, and a few more.

5.The Beehive. The Beehive is the parliament building in Wellington. That's where you go if you have an issue that you want the prime minister to fix. Or if you work there of course.

6. Fact 1. Wellington is actually the capital of New Zealand. It took over from Russel or Waitangi as some people call it. It became the capital on the 26th of July 1865.

7. Fact 2. It's just been named the worlds best city. Because of its affordable house prices, heaps of things to do, and everything is close together.

8. Fact 3. They still deliver Mail by boat. Yes, you heard right. Wellington delivers mail to Picton by boat.

9. Fact 4.Wellington is very windy. Wellington is the Windiest city in New Zealand. It's also the second windiest city in the world following closely behind Chicago in America

10. Fact 5. I've been to Wellington once and it was my first time out of the south island. We went up to Mount Victoria and I couldn't stand straight because it was way too windy.

Supernova Task

Today we had to create a DLO and answer some questions about Supernovas. I had 2 other people in my group and we had to do a lot of research. This is the DLO we created.

Mrs Handley Task

Welcome back to my blog. Today we read through 3 scenarios of uncomfortable situations. We had to choose one of those then choose one of 2 different tasks for it. Task 1 was to write a roleplay on how to deal with the situation and task 2 was to create a Powtoon and write some tips and tricks on how to deal with it. I chose Task 1 the roleplay. This is the existing text.

  • Monique’s parents expect her to come home directly from school

  • each day. But today, Jamila wants Monique to come to her house

  • for a little“get together” after school. Some of the other kids are

  • coming over and Jamila’s mother won’t be home. Monique doesn’t

  • want to go because she knows her parents will be really angry if

  • she goes and she isn’t sure it is safe without any adults there.

  • Jamila doesn’t want to take “no” for an answer because Monique is

  • her best friend.

This is my roleplay on how to deal with it.

Monique: "I'm sorry but I can't come over right now my parents want me to be home now."
Jamila: "Come on, It'll only be for a bit."
Monique: "I should be getting home now."
Jamila: "No, Come inside with me now!"
Monique: "I have an idea, how about I ask my parents and you ask your parents and we can organise it for another day?"
Jamila: "That's a good idea but I want you to come in now."
Monique: "Or another thing I can do is I'll come inside and I'll borrow your phone so I can ring my mum."
Jamila: "Yessssss! quickly come in so we can get more time"
If you're ever stuck in this situation try and negotiate with the other person for another time or negotiate with your parents somehow if you have contact with them.
Here are some tips and tricks for this.
Try and plan ahead.
Try and Give a believable excuse.
Walk away.
Use the cold shoulder.

Matariki

                                    Matariki

Matariki is the celebration of the Māori New Year for all New Zealanders.

3 Facts about Matariki.

1. The car manufacturer Subaru is actually named after Matariki. If you look at the Subaru Badge it actually has the 6 out of the 9 stars of Matariki.

2. Scientists have found 2 more stars of Matariki so now there are 9 stars of Matariki instead of 7 stars.

3. Some people think Matariki is a Constellation but they're wrong. It's actually a Star Cluster that has 9 stars. Their names are  Tupu-ā-Nuku, Tupu-ā-Rangi, Waipuna-ā-Rangi, Waiti, Waitā, Pohutukawa, Ururangi, Matariki and Hiwa-i-te-rangi.

Short Text Response

 25/5/21

Hello everyone welcome back to my blog. Today for English we read a short story about bullying. We also had to answer some questions about the story and us. These are the questions.

What did this poem make you think about a bully?

This poem made me feel bad for the bully. He obviously does it for a reason and he probably wants someone to be friends with him. The bully needs somebody to be friends with so they probably won't bully anybody if they at least have someone to stop them.

If you saw this bully what would you do?

I would choose to be an upstander and talk to the bully to see why he bullies people. I would also get an adult I trust to come and talk with the bully and hopefully make him stop bullying.

If you would like to read this poem here is the link:

If you have any questions please don't be afraid to comment.

Have you ever been bullied, and what did you do to stop it?

Part 2 Conflict & Assertiveness

We have also been learning the definitions of a few different words to do with bullying. There are 5 different words. Assertive, Passive, Aggressive, Boundaries, and Conflict. These are the definitions of all of the words we have been doing.

Assertive: You state firmly with authority.

Passive: not active, not resisting or fighting against. So you're basically just agreeing.

Aggressive: To fight back and likely to attack people. This means that you are always on the attack and rude/mean to people.

Boundaries: The limits we set for what we will accept. This means that you set lines that you have to stay in.

Conflict: To fight, struggle or disagree.

Thank you for reading this far.

My snazzy Skill

Hi everyone!

In Wananga, we have been doing a task about a special skill that we have. My special skill is Leadership, I have this skill in my kete. I show this in my everyday life when I play captain for my football team which helps my teammates out by giving them instructions and encouragement.

I think I'm pretty good at leadership skills but one thing that I struggle with is talking in front of people and that's a big part of leadership so I'm trying to work on that.

This is the DLO splash page that I made for my skill.
