Digital Task Board

Today in lockdown I did a task for wananga called drawing with sand. Its a really cool website that all you have to do is click and drag and it creates sand that you can use. You can also change the colour so if you wanted to draw a person you could but it would be very hard and it would take a while.

Here is the website if you want to have a go :D https://thisissand.com/

Digital Task Board

 Paint Like Jason Pollock

The activity I chose today was called Paint Like Jason Pollock.

It's a website where all you have to do is move your mouse and it follows with black lines but if you click it changes colour!.

Jason Pollock was an American painter that was known for painting random lined on a canvas and they sold for a lot of money.

It's really enjoyable and it cures boredom pretty easily. I spent a good 20 minutes on it just going back and forth.

Digital Task Board Lockdown

 Hi all!

This is my first post in lockdown since we've been in lockdown. Today I did a task about rice. It's a website with a quiz and for every question you get right you donate 1 grain of rice to a country in poverty. eg. Kenya. I did it for 10 minutes and earned someone 913 grains of rice. That's basically a full meal of rice! Here is the link to the website if you want to do it :D.

Integers

For the past few weeks in maths, I have been learning about Integers. Integers are negative numbers below zero. Integers are really weird because if you multiply a negative number by a positive number it will still be a negative number. So say if you want to work out -7x4 it will be -28. But if you multiply a negative number by a negative number it will be a positive number depending on the equation. So if you want to multiply -8x-4 it will be 32. Thank you for reading and if you want leave a comment :D

Report: The Heart Of Erebus

Today in English with Whaea Raewyn we were learning about Mount Erebus in Antarctica. We had a few tasks and questions to do with it so here are the questions.

What makes Mount Erebus so special?

It's a really big Active Volcano on the edge of Antarctica that is surrounded by strange formations including Ice caves, Frozen Collums of Steam, and hundreds of giant black rocks sprouting up from the ice.  There are people that stay right next to it and study it during the year at a place called the Mount Erebus Observatory near the summit.

Yeast

Today in science we learned about Yeast. We watched a video about Yeast and then we did an experiment with Yeast, Sugar, and lukewarm water once we combined that we put a balloon over the top of the flask.

Yeast is a fungi that grows all around us.

Yeast has been used for hundreds of years.

Yeast needs to be woken up from hibernation state.

We're going to use yeast to make ginger beer and this is part 2 of the post. Equipment and Method.

Aim: To look at how Yeast is used in foods.

Equipment:

Spoons,

Kettle,

Bowl,

Beaker,

Cloth Sieve,

Funnel,

Plastic Bottle (PET) and Bottle Cap.

Materials:

Bug (for a group of 3)
50ml warm water,

1/2 teaspoon active dried yeast,

1/2 teaspoon sugar,

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger.

Ginger Beer 1 Litre.

3/4 cup sugar,

1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar,

1L cold water,

Juice of 1/2 lemon,

1 teaspoon ginger beer bug.

Method:

1. In a large bowl, put the sugar and cream of tartar, then add the warm water.

2. Stir to dissolve the sugar before adding cold water.

3. Add the ginger beer bug to the large bowl of cold water.

4. Stir well and then pour into your clean bottle.

5. Label your bottle with group names.

6. Place all the bottles in the class container.

7. Store in a cool dark place for one week before drinking.

8. Make sure you open the bottle in the kitchen sink as it might overflow. Open the cap bit by bit to allow the air to escape.

The ginger beer must be drunk over the 6 days.

Chilli Tasting

Today we were doing Chilli Tasting in Science. We had to do some research about Chillis. We had to find out what they look like, what the chemical is called that makes them spicy and name some types of Chillis.

Section 1.

The definition of a chilli: a small hot tasting pod of a variety of capsicum used in sauces and relishes.

The chemical that makes chillis hot is called Capsaicin.

Section 2.

Carolina Reaper Pepper.

Trinidad Moruga Scorpion - PepperHead

Moruga Scorpion Pepper.

Habanero - Wikipedia

Habanero Pepper.

Section 3.

Top 6 hottest Peppers and where they grow.

6. Naga Viper. Grows in England.

5. Butch T Trinidad Scorpion. Grows in America.

4. Primo Pepper. Grows in America.

3. 7 Pot Douglah. Grows in the Caribbean Islands.

2. Moruga Trinidad Scorpion. Grows in America.

1. Carolina Reaper. Grows in America

Part 2.

What takes the hotness away after you eat chilli.

Aim: To see which is the best way to cool down the hot chilli taste in your mouth when eating a chilli.

Hypothesis: I think that by using milk I will be able to remove the hot chilli taste from my mouth

Equipment:

1. Milk

2. Water

3. Coca Cola

4. Tasting Cup

5. Chilli

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What works the best.

Coke.  Immediately Yes, After 3 Minutes Yes.

Milk. Immediately Yes, After 3 Minutes Yes.

Water. Immediately No, After 3 Minutes No.

Conclusion.

Milk could be a solution when eating spicy foods -- literally, That's because milk helps your mouth handle capsaicin, an oily chemical compound in chilli peppers. Capsaicin binds to a receptor in the tongue and creates a burning sensation... Casein protein found in milk can also bind to the capsaicin and wash it away.
