Mask Making

In drama this term we have been making masks from scratch. We had to do a lot of research about performing masks and we had to decide on what animal our mask was gonna be. Our mask had to be an animal and it could be fantasy or real. I decided on a Barn Owl. You can't really tell because there is no feathers that we could use and you can't see the pencil lines.

This is my barn owl mask.

Hopefully, we get to perform soon because I want to use my mask again. We haven't been able to perform yet because every time we are going to perform it starts to rain.

This is the slide that we have been using to do our mask making. Don't worry about the last few slides.

HHS 2021

Today in hurumanu with Mrs. Alpers we had to write about a positive aspect about school this year for the students coming next year. I chose to do science because the experiments that we do in science are so much fun and the science teachers are really cool too. The experiments are really enjoyable and I was looking forward to science since term 1. Some of the experiments you will do in science are lighting your hands on fire, making sherbert, chili tasting, making hokey pokey, and heaps more. My favourite one was lighting my hands on fire or making some hokey pokey.

There is also lots of stuff to do in sports. For Y 7/8 there isn't a lot of sports options but if you get chosen for something I can guarantee that it will be so much fun. There are lots of Friday sport options for winter and summer. There is also lots of fun stuff in PE as well.

Mask Making

In Drama, we are building up to doing a performance with a mask that we have made. We have to create a mask for the outside and inside. The outside mask has to be real or fantasy and I chose to do an owl mask.

It has to have eye holes and a way to breathe. My owl mask will be based on a Morepork Owl.

The mask has to have character and has to be facing the audience at all times so they can see what they are doing.

We also had to include some things that we need to remember when we are performing.

1. If it's loose hold the sides, not the front.

2. Always face the front.

3. Make different shapes with your body that relates to the character.

4. Do some gestures to keep the audience entertained.

5.  Your mask is your character role. STICK TO IT.

Chilli Tasting

Today in Science we had to create a blog post about chillis. We had to find 3 videos and 5 interesting facts.

1.  Videos

1. Funny  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB_0yGGgicQ

2. Facts about Chilli. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtoM-UTeqMY

3. Explaining SHU.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD0_yWgifDM

2.  5 Facts.

1. There are over 1000 different types of pepper.

2. Some parts of pepper are hotter than others.

3.  The hottest chili's have heaps of Vitamin C.

4.  If you have a stuffy nose then you should eat a pepper because that clears it instantly.

5.  Eating chillis helps with weight loss.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Method

Equipment.

1. Hot Chilli Sauce,

2. Popsical Stick,

3. Drinks - Soda, Water, Milk,

4. Timer.

Instructions

1. Get your equipment ready.

2. Get a drop of hot sauce on your popsicle stick.

3. Lick the Hot Chilli Sauce.

4. Start the timer.

5. After 2 mins drink your drink.

6. After 5 minutes, how hot is your mouth?

7. Repeat the experiment but with a different drink.

Results.

The first time, I had water and after 5 minutes I scored it a 4/10 for burning.

The second time, I had Coca-Cola and after 5 minutes I scored it a 2/10 for burning.

The third time, I had milk and after 5 minutes I scored it a 6/10 for burning.

Discussion.

I though that the milk would help because everyone says it helps but It made it worse for me. The coke was the best because it was flat and it tasted yummy even with the burning.

Why does chilli burn your mouth?

In chilli and hot sauce there is a chemical called capsacin which sticks to your tounge and triggers the temperature sensitive pain receptors in your mouth and it doesn't go away untill you wash it out.

Why did the milk reduce the burn?

It didn't help for me it made it lots worse.

Creating a brand

For the last week, we have been working on a task leading up to the business and enterprise launch next week. We had to create a brand and a logo and everything to do with a brand. Reuben, Kody, and I chose to do a lemonade business called "Lemonade Lounge". It sells different flavours of lemonade and there is lots of seating and couches for everyone to sit on. We had to create a mood board that helps us create our business. Here is our mood board.

Bacteria

Today in science we learnt about bacteria and then we had to do a science experiment with agar. Agar is a jelly-like substance that I don't know much about. We had to wet a cotton bud and then get bacteria from anywhere in the science room. Then we had to wipe the cotton but on the agar. Mr Palmer is going to put our agar in the incubator and when we come back next week we will have a look and it should have different types of bacteria growing.

Aim: To learn about bacteria and how they grow.

Equipment:

1. Agar Dish,

2. Cotton Bud Swab,

3. Vivid Pen,

Method:

1. Collect the bacteria on a cotton bud swab from taps, computer keyboards or desks.

2. Divide the agar in half by drawing a line on the lid.

3. Wipe the swab on the agar solution.

4. Put the petri dish into the incubator for one week to let the bacteria grow.

5. Draw and label a bacteria.

6. Draw and label a scientific diagram of the experiment.

Holiday Blog

 Hello everyone!

Welcome back to my blog, today we had to do a blog post on what we did in the 2 week holiday that we recently had. We had to follow a template with what we did. The template was called SPILES. SPILES is what you did in the holidays and each letter stands for something.

S. Social Activities,

P. Physical Activities,

I. Intellectual,

L. Likes,

E, Emotions,

S, Success,

For social activities, I hung out with my friends and family. I also went to the park and played some volleyball with a group of my friends.

For Physical activities, I went mountain biking at the adventure park on my Trek Remedy 9.8 which is my new bike. I also played football a lot and jumped on the tramp a lot too.

For Intellectual activities, I read some books and played video games with my friends which helped me communicate.

For Likes, I really enjoy a lot of physical activities like mountain biking and playing football. Hanging out with my friends and family too.

Some emotions I felt during the holidays were happy, bored, tired, hungry, and sometimes mad when I was losing my game.

Some success that happened was when I finished the Yoda trail at the adventure park which is the hardest trail and has a rating of 5 out of 5 for difficulty level. It was really difficult and it took me about 5 tried because I kept stacking on the same kicker like 3 times in a row.

Drama: Maui and the Fish Tableaus.

Today in drama we had to create a blog post about our Tableaus that we did about Maui and the Fish.
Tableaus are a fancy name for freeze frames. Something you need to make a Tableau good is Levels (The different height), Physicality (Body Movement), and Facial Expressions.  We did a set of Tableaus to do with Maui and the Fish. There were 3 Tableaus, one for the start, one for the middle, and one for the end.
For some reason the video of my group didn't save so I had to use another group's images. We also had to answer a few questions for each Tableau.

What works well in this tableau? The levels are very good and how they are crouched and standing up.
What would you improve/change in this tableau? I would change the physicality because there isn't a lot of body movement and everyone is sort of in the same position.
Where did your group use facial expressions, Physicality, and levels well? This group didn't use a lot of facial expressions very well everyone is just blank-faced. They used okay physicality but there isn't a lot of body positions. The levels though are very good because they aren't all in the same height.
What works well in this tableau? This tableau is very good because the facial expressions are all different and everyone is shocked.
What would you improve/change in this tableau? I wouldn't change much because it's quite well done. I would only change Reuben's physicality because he's just sitting there looking at Adrian standing up.
Where did your group use facial expressions, Physicality, and levels well? This group used facial expressions really good but the Physicality is better than the last one but still not amazing.  The levels are good too but not amazing.

What works well in this tableau? This tableau is not the best but it is okay. The levels are pretty good and the physicality is okay but there are no facial expressions anywhere.
What would you improve/change in this tableau? I would change the facial expressions because everyone is just staring at Adrian standing up.
Where did your group use facial expressions, Physicality, and levels well? This group had good levels, Okay physicality, and terrible facial expressions. This tableau isn't the best.

Thank you for reading.

Learning Story No.1 Maths.

Today I did my first learning story for this term and it was about maths. We did a bunch of stuff this term even with the lockdown. I will post more learning stories maybe about 3 but I'm not sure. Here it is.

Kei te pehea koe?

Today for wananga we had to do an activity about Kei te pehea Koe? In English that translates to How are you feeling. We had to create a DLO about it and write some responses. This is my DLO. Reuben also helped with it as well. :D

Litmus Experiment

Hello everyone welcome back to my blog. Today in Science we did an experiment using Litmus Paper. It's a paper that can detect whether a liquid is an acid or an alkali. This is what we did.

Materials:

1. Red Litmus Paper,

2. Blue Litmus Paper,

3. Sodium Hydroxide,

4. Hydrochloric Acid.

5. Pipette,

6. 4 Test Tubes.

Steps:

1. Rip the litmus paper in half and put half in each test tube.2

2. Add 3 drops of hydrochloric acid to the blue litmus paper in test tube 1.

3. Add 3 drops of hydrochloric acid to the red litmus paper in test tube 2.

4. Add 3 drops of Sodium Hydroxide to the blue litmus paper in test tube 3.

5. Add 3 drops of Sodium Hydroxide to the blue litmus paper in test tube 4.

Conclusion:

The experiment was amazing and I did not expect what to happen. If you want to know what happens you should try it yourself.

Football in Level 2

Hello Everyone welcome back to my blog!

Today in Mrs. Alpers's class we had to do a blog post on something that we have been studying or experiencing at Level 2 lockdown and the return to school. I chose to do Football because that's one of my passions that I enjoy doing.

I've been enjoying being back at school and socializing with people instead of talking through a screen. Playing football is much more fun with more than 1 person and it's really fun at school because there is a lot of people. Football training is quite difficult now that I'm not used to it and all of the exercise. I am enjoying actually being with people at school and learning at home just isn't the same. Thank you for reading and have a good day :D.

Baking Soda

 Sherbet

Today in science we made sherbert. We watched a video about Baking Soda because it's one of the main ingredients and its uses. There are a lot of uses for baking soda and here are some of them.

1. Scrubs away marks on walls.

2. Underarm Deodorant.

3. Clean and unclog smelly sinks.

4. Clean your tiles.

5. Deodorise your kitty litter tray.

6. Clean your oven.

7.  Wash build-up out of your hair.

8. Deodorise your carpets

9. Helps wash clothes.

Here is how to make it.

Put in 1 teaspoon of powdered drink crystals. (eg Raro)

1/4 teaspoon of citric acid.

1 teaspoon of Icing Sugar.

1/4 teaspoon Baking Soda.

We also had some questions to answer about the sherbert.

1. Which two ingredients in the sherbert are involved in the chemical reaction? Baking Soda and Citric Acid.

2. Which ingredients are not involved? Icing Sugar and Raro.

3. Can you think of any other chemical reaction that might happen in the kitchen?

Bread making with Yeast.

4. Which ingredient is an acid? Citric Acid.

5. Which ingredient is a base? The powdered drink crystals.

Digital Task Board

Today in lockdown I did a task for wananga called drawing with sand. Its a really cool website that all you have to do is click and drag and it creates sand that you can use. You can also change the colour so if you wanted to draw a person you could but it would be very hard and it would take a while.

Here is the website if you want to have a go :D https://thisissand.com/

Digital Task Board

 Paint Like Jason Pollock

The activity I chose today was called Paint Like Jason Pollock.

It's a website where all you have to do is move your mouse and it follows with black lines but if you click it changes colour!.

Jason Pollock was an American painter that was known for painting random lined on a canvas and they sold for a lot of money.

It's really enjoyable and it cures boredom pretty easily. I spent a good 20 minutes on it just going back and forth.

Digital Task Board Lockdown

 Hi all!

This is my first post in lockdown since we've been in lockdown. Today I did a task about rice. It's a website with a quiz and for every question you get right you donate 1 grain of rice to a country in poverty. eg. Kenya. I did it for 10 minutes and earned someone 913 grains of rice. That's basically a full meal of rice! Here is the link to the website if you want to do it :D.

Integers

For the past few weeks in maths, I have been learning about Integers. Integers are negative numbers below zero. Integers are really weird because if you multiply a negative number by a positive number it will still be a negative number. So say if you want to work out -7x4 it will be -28. But if you multiply a negative number by a negative number it will be a positive number depending on the equation. So if you want to multiply -8x-4 it will be 32. Thank you for reading and if you want leave a comment :D
