Book Of The Road

On Monday we started this activity called "Book Of The Road". It's an activity where you get a buddy school and you send your work. Our buddy class is from St Peters School (It's a private school). We got a box sent to us from "School Kit" ( the people who founded "Book Of The Road") and it has 3D glasses and envelopes and all that jazz. All we know about our buddy class is that St Peters School is in Cambridge in the North Island.

Facts About Mars

Last week for Hurumanu3 we watched a movie called the martian. (you may have seen my other post about it). We had to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) about 8 facts about mars. Me and Kayden chose to make a biteable. Kayden didn't have a Chromebook so we took turns on mine.

It was kind of tricky because we had to ask open-ended questions. Open-ended questions are questions that cannot be answered with yes or no. It took us about 2 periods to do it but we ended up finishing it just before the bell rang.

Procedural Writing

Today for Hurumanu 3 we did Procedural writing. We did a practice procedural writing about breakfast. We could either do what we had for breakfast this morning or any breakfast we chose.
I chose fried eggs on toast, it was pretty easy but I didn't understand the difference between materials and ingredients but then Reuben told me and I understood. This is the Procedural Writing that I did.

Fried Eggs On Toast

• Materials
• Toaster
• Plate
• Knife & Fork
• Pan
• Stovetop

• Ingredients
• 1 or 2 Eggs
• 1 piece of Bread
• Salt and pepper

• Steps
• Get a pan and put it on a stovetop
• Turn the stovetop onto 7 or 8
• Wait for the pan to get warm and grab 1 or 2 eggs and crack them into the pan
• Put the egg shells into the bin
• Grab a toaster and put the piece of bread into it
• When the toast pops put it onto the plate
• When the edge of the eggs turn white cover the pan
• Wait another 4 to 5 minutes
• When the eggs are finished carefully get them out and put them onto your toast.
• Put salt and pepper on top of the eggs
• Enjoy!

I think fried eggs are really good and they taste good as well. They are a great breakfast because
they have so much protein but just watch out for how much bread you have.
  When using pans please have adult supervision.

Starlink Satellites

On the 17 of February 2020 at approx 9:45pm about 39 Satellites flew over Christchurch. They flew in a single file line. These were for SpaceX's Starlink. Starlink is a satellite constellation being constructed by American company SpaceX, to provide satellite internet access. This first launch of the satellite's was on the 14 of may 2019 when over 60 of them were launched.

Is was a really nice night so we all went out onto the grass and watched all of the satellite's go past. It was really cool because the ISS (International Space Station) and the Eagle helicopter were also flying over at the same time. Tangata Whenua Who are we Hurumanu1

Today in Hurumanu1 Who are we. We got to watch a video and take notes about The first Māori people that arrived in Aoteroa from Hawaiki around 1280. They came from SE Asia, Taiwan, Solomon islands and Papua New Guinea. Some scientists think they even got as far from South America.

We watched the video and took notes about the history of Aotearoa. We had to take notes about what they brang to Aotearoa like Kumura, Taro and paper mulberry. Aotearoa was dicscovered between 1200-1300 by Kupe and his wife Kuramārōtini when they were chasing Te-weke-a-Muturangi.
Once Kupe and his wife Kuramārōtini had gone back to Hawaiki the people came to Aotearoa in  groups of 12-25 waka with at least 150 people each.

Respect when talking to the teacher

Today we did an activity about the CARR cards. C means Commitment, A means Achievement, R means Resilience, and the other R means Respect. We had the choice to do an activity on any letter. We chose Respect when talking to the teacher.

We made a plan on what not to do when talking to the teacher like don't roll your eyes etc. Once we had written our plan we chose to do a digital poster. I did most of the work but David helped a little bit. And E.J couldn't do anything because he didn't have a Chromebook. It was really easy because it's only a small poster but it looks really good.

The Martian Hur3

Kia Ora! My name is Dylan and this is my first year at HHS. I came from South Hornby School and i'm really looking forward to school this year.


In Hurumanu 3 Science we have been watching "The Martian" Its about this group of Astronauts going to mars and one of them gets left behind and has to survive. My predictions of this movie were that all of the astronauts get stuck on mars and they have to survive. It was kinda right but only one got stuck there.  One of the first things that happens is there is a massive storm on mars and Mark Wattney gets hit by a flying satelite and everyone thinks he is dead, so they do an emergency launch.

After everyone left on the space ship the next day Mark wakes up and walks over to the shelter. He has part of an antenna stuck in his stomach.


Then about halfway through the movie he sorts out how much food he has and realises he has to try and grow some. So he grows potatoes with poo. Then he went exploring and found "Pathfinder" (which is a rover that crashed) and he fixed it and made contact with NASA.(National Aeronautics Space Administration)

After he made contact with NASA they told the Ares 3 crew and they turned around to go get him.
Mark made adjustments to the spacecraft that was left on mars and the Ares 3 crew caught him.

My favourite part of the movie was when Mark was flying around like Iron Man.
