Standing Up To Our Rights

Learning Outcome: Demonstrate how social messages and stereotypes can affect feelings of self-worth.

Discrimination - the act of treating some people unfairly because of prejudice.

Prejudice  - an opinion formed without knowing all the facts.

Stereotypes - a standardized and oversimplified and inaccurate conception held in common by many people.

Protest - an objection or complaint, to express objection in a planned, organized way.

Social Messaging - the passing of a message/idea from person to person in a community.

Dawn Raids.

In English with Mrs. Handley this morning we had to read a text about the Dawn Raids in New Zealand and answer a few questions.

- What happened?

Police were allowed to go into people's homes and stop people on the street to prove that they belong in New Zealand.

- How did Stereotyping and Social Messaging play a role in this incident?

People with coloured skin were the only ones asked because they were "Foreigners"

- How has this protest impacted NZ?

Cops aren't allowed to go into people's houses without a warrant now.

Bastion Point 

We did the same task with Mrs. Handley but today we learned about Bastion Point and what happened. We also had to answer similar questions.

- What happened?

The police were trying to demolish the places that people were living at Bastion Point because the Government wanted to build a housing development on it but the people who owned the land didn't want to.

- How did Stereotyping and Social Messaging play a role in this incident?

- How has this protest impacted NZ?

The land was eventually given back to the original owners on the 1st of July (Today) 1988

Hornby High Student Recipe

 Today in Mrs Handleys class we had to create a recipe for the best student at Hornby High School. Mr Sutton (Our Principle) wanted us to create the best student at Hornby High School with different ingredients and a method of making them. This is my student recipe.

Promoting Outstanders

 Today in English we had to choose from 2 different tasks. The first task was to get photogenic where you had to take some photos of bystanders and outstanders. The second task was to create a poster about bystanders and outstanders. I chose the Get Photogenic task with Pheonix, Ken, Reuben, and Jed. These are the photos we took for the bystanders and outstanders.

Vocab Task

 Today in Mrs Handleyls class we had to create a Kahoot on the meanings of different words.

STEAM Problems.

 Today in Wananga we have started a Kete called STEAM. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. It's called Hornby 2050 and we have to think of a problem that we could fix to benefit the planet and make Hornby 2050 a good place. The problem that I thought of was Global Warming making Ocean levels rise. I was thinking that you could use the seaweed and kelp you find on beaches to make some sort of biofuel to power cars. Or, you could filter the seawater a bunch of times to make it drinkable and send it away to different countries so you can water crops with it and drink it.Z

Our school values are very important because it forms us into a person for after school when we are out in the real world. They also help us be good people and kind to other people so we don't get mistreated.

10 Fun Facts about Wellington

 Wellington, a place where you go if you would like to be blown over by the wind. For our quick write today we had to try and find 10 facts about Wellington. 

1.Location. Wellington is at the very bottom of the North Island.

2.Population. Wellington has just under 250,000 people. That's a lot of people and I bet you can imagine what it's like in peak hour traffic.

3.Māori name. Wellington's Māori name is Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

4. Celebrities from Wellington. A few famous people from Wellington include Russel Crowe, Kerry Fox, Karl Urban, Emmet Skilton, and a few more.

5.The Beehive. The Beehive is the parliament building in Wellington. That's where you go if you have an issue that you want the prime minister to fix. Or if you work there of course.

6. Fact 1. Wellington is actually the capital of New Zealand. It took over from Russel or Waitangi as some people call it. It became the capital on the 26th of July 1865.

7. Fact 2. It's just been named the worlds best city. Because of its affordable house prices, heaps of things to do, and everything is close together.

8. Fact 3. They still deliver Mail by boat. Yes, you heard right. Wellington delivers mail to Picton by boat.

9. Fact 4.Wellington is very windy. Wellington is the Windiest city in New Zealand. It's also the second windiest city in the world following closely behind Chicago in America

10. Fact 5. I've been to Wellington once and it was my first time out of the south island. We went up to Mount Victoria and I couldn't stand straight because it was way too windy.
